Ridge Jumps and Mantle Exhumation in Back-Arc Basins

چکیده
Back-arc basins in continental settings can develop into oceanic basins, when extension lasts long enough to break up the lithosphere and allow mantle melting that generates new crust. Often, basement of these is not only composed crust, but also exhumed mantle, fragments intrusive magmatic bodies, a complex mid-ocean ridge system characterised by distinct relocations spreading centre. To better understand dynamics lead characteristic structures back-arc we performed 2D numerical models with asymmetric time-dependent boundary conditions simulate episodic trench retreat. We find that, all models, leads rift and/or jumps. In our parameter space, length jump ranges between 1 65 km timing necessary produce varies 0.4 7 Myr. With shortest duration first extensional phase, observe strong asymmetry margins basin, margin further from being outcropping lithospheric section thinned other cases, creates two consecutive leaving fragment basins. Finally, phase form well-developed basin (>35 long), very short intra-oceanic jump. Our are able reproduce many observed today, showing transient nature retreat episodes fast slow cause jumps, exhumation, formation.

Mantle melting as a function of water content beneath back-arc basins
[1] Subduction zone magmas are characterized by high concentrations of H2O, presumably derived from the subducted plate and ultimately responsible for melting at this tectonic setting. Previous studies of the role of water during mantle melting beneath back-arc basins found positive correlations between the H2O concentration of the mantle (H2Oo) and the extent of melting (F), in contrast to the...
متن کاملMicrobial Ecology of Mid-Ocean Ridges and Back-Arc Basins
Over the past two decades, microbiologists have gained significant insights into the diversity and physiology of microbial communities associated with deep-sea hydrothermal systems. Much of the initial research focused on mid-ocean ridge (MOR) systems; however, because of the greater heterogeneity of vent fluid chemistry and sulfide structures from back-arc basin (BAB) systems, recent studies h...
متن کاملClustering of arc volcanoes caused by temperature perturbations in the back-arc mantle
Clustering of arc volcanoes in subduction zones indicates along-arc variation in the physical condition of the underlying mantle where majority of arc magmas are generated. The sub-arc mantle is brought in from the back-arc largely by slab-driven mantle wedge flow. Dynamic processes in the back-arc, such as small-scale mantle convection, are likely to cause lateral variations in the back-arc ma...

متن کاملFrom orogenic hinterlands to Mediterranean-style back-arc basins: a comparative analysis
Hinterland plateaux and Mediterranean-style back-arc basins both form behind active subduction zones or collisional megathrusts, and share many characteristics: (1) early crustal thickening to about twice normal continental thickness; (2) thin lithospheric mantle; (3) mixed magmatism including asthenospheric, lithospheric, and crustal melts; (4) late-stage horizontal extension accompanied by ve...
